Weekend Lane Closures Ahead for Memorial Drive in DeKalb County

If you’re a regular on Memorial Drive, buckle up for some weekend lane closures starting July 28.

It’s all about giving that aging road a facelift and ensuring a smoother ride for drivers traveling between the City of Decatur and the Gwinnett County line.

Dubbed by the Georgia Department of Transportation as a resurfacing project, it involves a stretch from Ponce de Leon Avenue (that’s State Route 8 for the map geeks) to the DeKalb-Gwinnett line.

Starting Friday night at 9 p.m. (yeah, it’s a bit late, but it’s to avoid peak hours), one right lane will be shut down in both northbound and southbound directions. This lane closure will carry on until 5 a.m. on Saturday. This routine will repeat itself throughout the entire weekend.

The GDOT team, being the night owls they are, will take advantage of these quiet hours to spruce up the roadway and turn lanes. It’s all part of a bigger plan to improve the condition of the road and make your ride smoother.

This resurfacing project, costing about $5 million, aims to make the road safer for drivers. But keep in mind, patience is key here. The project won’t be complete until fall 2023.

Now, if you’re worried about getting caught in delays, GDOT has got your back. They suggest checking out real-time work status and traffic conditions before you hit the road. You can call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.

And remember folks, when you see those orange cones, slow down and take care.
