Many people avoid spooky places, even if they don’t believe in ghosts. A new poll shows which Georgia graveyards people are most afraid to visit alone after dark.

What’s Happening: A life insurance agency, Choice Mutual, asked Americans which cemetery they would be least prepared to enter by themselves at night.

What’s Important: Three Georgia locations were named the state’s most feared. Two are in Savannah and one is in Atlanta.

Georgia’s Scariest Spots:

  • #1: Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah: This spot is known for its beautiful mossy oaks and marble statues. But visitors report strange feelings, like sudden cold drafts or humming sounds near the grave of a little girl named Gracie Watson.
  • #2: Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah: Located in the city’s historic district, this cemetery has a dark past of disease and war. People say the air can turn cold without warning, and the old gravestones are leaning and broken.
  • #3: Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta: As Atlanta’s oldest public cemetery, it is the final resting place for soldiers, poets, and politicians. Some visitors claim to hear marching boots or smell cigar smoke in the Confederate section at night.

The Big Picture: The poll also named the top 10 scariest graveyards in the country, with Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York taking the top spot. “You don’t need to believe in ghosts to feel something in these places,” said Anthony Martin, founder of Choice Mutual. “Cemeteries are where stories outlive the people who told them – and that’s what really makes them haunting.”
