Lanes Will Be Closed on I-285 Near Mt. Vernon Highway This Weekend

The Gist: Heads up, drivers. Major lane closures on I-285 around Mt. Vernon Highway are kicking off tonight. Expect snags in the eastbound and westbound lanes between Riverside Drive and Roswell Road.

What Happened?: Starting tonight at 11 p.m., and rolling into Saturday morning at 5 a.m., crews are shutting down double left-lanes and shoulders on both sides of I-285 near the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge. The same will go for Saturday night into Sunday. If weather or other issues mess up the plan, there are backup dates set for September 24 and 25.

By The Numbers:

  • 60-day lane closure began on September 5
  • Double, left-lane and shoulder closures for both eastbound and westbound lanes
  • Alternate closure dates: September 24 and 25
  • Eastbound and westbound single, left-lane and shoulder closures stretch for a half-mile

Why It Matters: The Mt. Vernon Highway bridge is getting a serious face-lift as part of the I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane project. This is a chunk of a bigger effort to juice up Georgia’s transportation network. Better lanes and a sturdy bridge will hopefully make the drive smoother and safer in the long run. But for now, expect delays.

What’s Next?: Besides the overnight closures this weekend, drivers should be ready for other short-term closures. This is part of ongoing construction work that aims to extend the auxiliary lane between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive and rebuild the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge. Keep an eye out for updates and plan your routes accordingly.
