MACON — A man who went missing in the Ocmulgee River last week has been found dead.

Authorities have recovered the body of 22-year-old Jahvon Whitest, who had been missing since Wednesday in the Ocmulgee River at Frank Amerson Park.

Members of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department Dive Team and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources located Whitest’s body at around 11:24 a.m. on Monday.

The family has been notified of the tragic news. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.

According to witnesses, three men came to the park and decided to go for a swim. They swam against the current to an area where the rocks were visible above water. When two of the men made it to the rocks, they noticed that the third man was struggling against the current. The two men tried to help but lost sight of him.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and began searching for the missing man. The dive teams stopped the search on Tuesday night and resumed their efforts on Wednesday morning.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at (478)751-7500.
