ATLANTA — The city is preparing to bid farewell to Jim Maddox, the longest serving council member in Atlanta’s history, known affectionately as the ‘Dean of the Atlanta City Council.’ Maddox, who dedicated 32 years of his life to public service, will be remembered in a series of events this week.

Maddox’s legacy will be honored with a public viewing at the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel on the historic campus of Morehouse College, located at 830 Westview Drive, SW. The viewing is set for Wednesday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., allowing Atlantans to pay their respects.

For close friends and family, a visitation is scheduled later that day from 5-7 p.m. at Murray Brothers Funeral Home, 1199 Utoy Springs Drive, SW.

The community will come together for a celebration of life service on Thursday, August 24, at 11 a.m. at the West Hunter Street Baptist Church, 1040 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, SW. Following the service, Maddox will be laid to rest at Lincoln Cemetery, 2275 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard, NW.

Maddox’s commitment to Atlanta was evident in his long tenure. He served eight terms as the District 11 representative, retiring in 2009. His dedication and leadership have left an indelible mark on the city’s political landscape.

In remembrance of Maddox’s legacy, the family has requested that, instead of flowers, contributions be made to organizations close to his heart. Donations can be directed to the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA, Quality Living Services, Inc., and Morehouse College. Those wishing to contribute can find more information at YMCA of Metro Atlanta or Morehouse College’s giving page.

Maddox’s dedication to public service and his lasting impact on the city will be remembered by many Atlantans for years to come.
