Severe weather is expected to hit parts of North and Central Georgia today, according to a statement released by the National Weather Service.
An enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms has been issued for far Northwest Georgia, while a slight risk is in effect for the remainder of North and Central Georgia.
The severe weather is expected to be caused by a strong cold front that will sweep across the region this afternoon.
Damaging wind gusts and an isolated strong tornado or two are the primary threats associated with the storm system.
Residents in far northwest and far north central Georgia should be particularly cautious as a high wind warning has been issued for these areas from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. today. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected, which could bring down trees and powerlines.
A wind advisory also remains in effect for the remainder of the area, with gusts as high as 35 to 45 mph.
The National Weather Service is urging residents to stay alert and stay informed about the weather conditions in their area. They should also take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property from the potential hazards of the storm.
