5 Killed in Major Collision That Shut Down I-85 South At Ga. 316 in Gwinnett

In a devastating incident, a three-vehicle collision on the westbound ramp of SR 316 (University Parkway) to I-85 southbound has claimed the lives of five individuals and left three others injured. The Gwinnett Police Accident Investigation Unit is currently handling the case.

The collision occurred shortly before 4 a.m., when multiple 911 calls reported a vehicle plunging over the wall of the raised ramp, ultimately landing on the I-85 southbound Collector-Distributor road leading to Pleasant Hill Rd. Promptly responding to the incident, officers from the Central Precinct requested the assistance of the Accident Investigation Unit. Upon arrival, Gwinnett County Fire Personnel tragically confirmed the deaths of five individuals at the scene, with three additional individuals being rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

As a result of this harrowing collision, the SR 316 westbound ramps to I-85 southbound and Pleasant Hill Rd, as well as the I-85 southbound Collector-Distributor road leading to Pleasant Hill Rd, had to be temporarily shut down.

Fortunately, the roadways have since been reopened, allowing traffic to resume its normal flow. Meanwhile, the Accident Investigation Unit continues its diligent work to ascertain the causes of the accident and evaluate the extent of the injuries sustained by the surviving individuals.

To respect the privacy of those involved, the specific identifying information of the deceased will only be released once the Next of Kin has been notified.

The circumstances leading to the collision and the severity of the injuries sustained by the survivors remain undetermined.
