23-year-old Man Drowns While Swimming in Lake Lanier

The Gist:

A swimmer, Edgar Steven Cruz Martinez, 23, lost his life in a drowning incident at Lake Lanier. Emergency crews found his body submerged in 10 feet of water using boat-mounted sonar.

What Happened?:

Late Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m., a flurry of emergency responders descended upon Lanier Park following reports of a possible drowning. Responders included, game wardens, fire crews from Gwinnett County and officers from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The Rescue Operation:

Upon arriving, crews initiated a search operation with the help of advanced boat-mounted sonar. The technology led them to Martinez’s body, submerged in about 10 feet of water. By then, it was too late; he was confirmed dead at the scene.

Local Perspectives:

Lake Lanier has been a spot for relaxation and fun, but locals know that it has its dangers. Last summer alone saw multiple drowning incidents. As the community mourns, it’s important to remember that knowing how to swim is not enough; understanding water conditions and potential risks can be lifesaving.
