ROSWELL — Residents who pay the city of Roswell for utilities, taxes, court fees and other services using a credit card may have to pay a 2.5% transaction fee soon.

Credit card transaction fees are commonly charged for services and are often worked into the price of goods at retail establishments. Up to this point, the city of Roswell has absorbed the merchant fees and not passed them on to residents.

The Roswell City Council will vote on the new transaction fees at a city council meeting Monday night.

According to information provided by the city, Roswell’s 2023 budget proposal is based on the assumption that the city will no longer absorb the cost of merchant fees associated with credit card transactions.

If approved by council, the fees would go into effect July 1, but the Recreation Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department would not start charging them until Jan. 1, 2023.

Residents and customers can avoid the fees by using cash, check, bill pay or automatic bank draft.

The vote on the issue will take place Monday at 7 p.m. at Roswell City Hall.
