PEACHTREE CORNERS — Gwinnett County Fire officials say 20 residents have been displaced after fire damaged their apartment complex in the overnight hours on Christmas.
The fire occurred at an apartment unit on Beverly Glen Village Lane in Peachtree Corners.
Firefighters responded at 2:49 a.m. to a report of an apartment building on fire at the Medlock Woods Apartments. A caller to 911 reported hearing what sounded like an explosion and said the building was on fire.
Crews arrived to find heavy fire burning in the attic and several top floor units on the back of a two/three split, wood-frame apartment building. All residents of the 10-unit building were already evacuated when fire trucks arrived and there were no injuries reported.
It took firefighters about 45-minutes to bring the blaze completely under control. The fire caused heavy damage to five or six apartment units and smoke and water damage the units directly below. Firefighters completed a primary and secondary search and did not find anyone inside the building.
The exact cause of the fire is under active investigation. The Fire Investigator has not been able to located or speak with occupants in the unit where the fire is believed to have started.
Anyone with information about the blaze is asked to contact the Gwinnett Fire Investigation Section at 678.518.4890.
The Red Cross and Management from the complex are assisting approximately 20 residents displaced by the damage.
