Holiday Safety Tips: Shop Smart and Stay Secure

Start

The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and celebrations, but it’s also a time to stay vigilant and practice holiday safety. Sheriff David Davis and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office have shared some simple, effective ways to keep you and your loved ones secure while shopping, traveling, or enjoying the season.

When You’re Shopping: Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Avoid overloading yourself with packages and don’t leave personal items unattended. To minimize risks, avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash. Keep a record of your credit card numbers at home in case of loss or theft.

Safety in Parking Lots: Always lock your car and store valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk. If you’re shopping at night, stick to well-lit areas and keep your keys in hand. Before entering your vehicle, take a moment to check inside and around it for anything suspicious. If something seems off or your vehicle has been tampered with, contact law enforcement immediately.

Online Shopping Precautions: Online shopping is convenient, but it comes with its own risks. Make sure your device has updated security software and only shop on secure websites (look for “https” in the address bar). Never use public Wi-Fi for purchases and double-check the privacy policies of websites before sharing personal or financial information.

Protecting Your Packages: If ordering online, consider having deliveries sent to a secure location like your workplace or a trusted neighbor’s home. Schedule deliveries for times when someone will be available to receive them, and always require a signature for high-value items.

At Home: Even when you’re at home, it’s vital to stay secure. Lock all doors and windows, use light timers, and keep valuables out of sight. If you’re leaving town, let a trusted friend or neighbor know and ask them to pick up mail and newspapers. This helps maintain the appearance that someone is home, discouraging potential burglars.

On the Road: Traveling this season? Keep an eye on the weather and ensure your vehicle is prepared for potential challenges. Carry emergency supplies like chains for your tires, maintain a full gas tank, and use caution when driving in unfamiliar areas or during adverse weather conditions.
