The Gist: A first-of-its-kind Obstetric Emergency Department dedicated to pregnant and postpartum patients has been opened by AdventHealth Gordon, enhancing the level of care for expectant mothers in Northwest Georgia.

What Happened?: AdventHealth Gordon rolled out its dedicated obstetric emergency department on July 18, offering 24/7 immediate access to an in-house physician and care team to pregnant and postpartum patients.

They can avail care prior to delivery, during childbirth, and in the postpartum phase. This new OBED marks a pivotal partnership between The Baby Place and the Emergency Room teams at AdventHealth Gordon.

Why It Matters: The dedicated facility is unique in Northwest Georgia, ensuring round-the-clock care to patients near their homes. It addresses the critical needs of pregnant patients experiencing medical emergencies, offering a comprehensive suite of services from fetal heart rate monitoring to immediate care. It also treats pregnancy-related concerns for pregnant patients over 20 weeks gestation, including abdominal pain, preeclampsia, and postpartum complications. Reatha Clary, RN, director of The Baby Place, notes the OBED is not just an emergency room “lane” for pregnant people, but a reassurance and a resource for the community.
