SAVANNAH — A 60-year-old man died while in police custody after being questioned as part of an aggravated assault investigation.
The death occurred early this morning at police headquarters in Savannah.
The man’s identity is not being released at this time as a result of the active investigation.
The man had been brought to police headquarters for questioning in connection to an aggravated assault investigation and was in the interview room alone when the incident occurred.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers found him suffering from injuries sustained by an object in his possession and attempted life saving measures, however, he died as a result of his injuries.
The GBI was immediately contacted to begin an investigation. This is standard procedure for an in-custody death. All further requests will need to be forwarded to the GBI.
All involved Savannah Police Department personnel have been placed on administrative leave, which GBI officials say is standard procedure during this type of investigation.
