ATLANTA — In response to heat indexes above 100 degrees, the city of Atlanta opened a cooling center yesterday that will remain open through Friday.
The cooling center will be open from noon to 7 p.m. each day.
The center is located at the Old MLK Natatorium at 90 Boulevard, in Altanta.
Water and light snacks will be provided to residents while in the cooling center.
Today, the heat index values are expected to reach up to 107 degrees between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
The National Weather Service is advising residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
On Friday, the heat index could reach 110 degrees, with strong thunderstorms also expected.
There may be a reprieve from the high temperatures in sight. According to the National Weather Service, a weak cold front will push into the area after Friday before rebounding back to high temperatures on Wednesday.
