Georgia Gwinnett College was under a lockdown Thursday morning due to a nearby shooting, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.
The Gwinnett County Police Department is actively investigating a homicide involving a male who was shot in front of an apartment building in Lawrenceville.
Officers responded to the Sugar Mill apartments at 855 Walther Blvd just after 10 a.m., after someone called 911 to report hearing a gunshot and seeing a man lying at the bottom of a stairwell.
When officers arrived, they discovered that the man was dead with at least one gunshot wound.
The Georgia Gwinnett Campus was initially put on lock down as officers searched the area for potential suspects. A K9 unit responded and a thorough search of the area was conducted. Once the search was completed the lockdown was lifted.
The lockdown began just after 10:40 p.m. and school officials gave the All Clear alert at 11:29 p.m. Police will continue increased patrols on campus.
At this time, investigators are trying to determine why the man was at the apartment complex. Detectives are asking any witnesses to come forward and provide whatever information they can on the shooting.
According to school officials, the suspect is described as a black male in a white t-shirt and dirty sweatpants.
