Train accidents in the United States are more common than many realize. In 2023 alone, there were 2,192 highway-rail grade crossing collisions, resulting in 248 fatalities and 765 injuries. These incidents include vehicles and pedestrians being struck by trains at crossings, as well as other types of collisions.

The number of fatalities at rail crossings represented 29% of all railroad-related deaths that year. Additionally, nonfatal injuries remain significant, with over 6,200 reported in 2022. Most of these injuries and fatalities involve trespassers on the tracks.
