Game Changer?: Georgia reports more than 2,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day

The number of new coronavirus cases per day in Georgia continues to reach new highs, as the pandemic continues despite reopening the economy.

The state added, 2,225 new cases Sunday, shattering all previous records for single-day increases since the pandemic began. The total number of cases statewide is 77,210.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, 2,778 people have died from coronavirus in Georgia.

At the height of the pandemic in April, the state’s rolling 7-day average was about 761 cases per day. That number has skyrocketed to more than 1,300 according to estimates from the department of public health.

On Friday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp acknowledged the increase in cases, but said he has no plans to impose any new restrictions at this point in time.
