When Hospitality Goes Wrong: Buford Resident Robbed in Home-Sharing Scam

The Gist: A Buford homeowner’s trust was exploited by an armed robber using a home-sharing platform to gain entry into the home.

According to the Gwinnett County Police, 26-year-old Khalil Hamilton tricked the resident into assisting with a bathroom repair, only to pull out a handgun and rob the homeowner.

The Details: On September 26, at around 11 p.m., police say Hamilton rented a basement room through a popular home-sharing site. The home is located on Seed Way in Buford. Once inside, he texted the victim claiming he needed help with bathroom repairs. When the resident arrived to assist, Hamilton brandished a black handgun, ordering the victim to lie on the ground. He then zip-tied the victim, swiping a wallet and a watch before making his getaway.

Spotted: Hamilton was last spotted driving an older Honda model with a Texas license plate marked SSF5628. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings. He has existing connections to Texas and Philadelphia.

In Context: Home-sharing platforms have generally been considered a convenient option for travelers, but this incident raises questions about the safety measures in place.

Why It Matters: This incident serves as a cautionary tale for both homeowners and potential renters, putting a spotlight on the possible risks of home-sharing. Gwinnett County residents are now on high alert for Hamilton, who is considered armed and dangerous.
