Scam Alert: No, the Clarke County Sheriff's Office isn't asking you to use ApplePay to get rid of a warrant

Residents of Clarke County need to stay alert, as a scammer is on the loose, reportedly making calls and posing as a representative of the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office. The fraudster is telling people they have an arrest warrant and instructing them to pay money through CashPay or ApplePay to settle the matter.

“The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for money to be sent or fines to be paid with a cash app or gift card,” warned the Sheriff’s Office in a statement.

If you’re contacted by someone claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office and they ask for payment, you’re advised to call (706) 613-3250 to verify the authenticity of the call.

While the technology to spoof calls has become increasingly accessible, scams of this nature prey on unsuspecting individuals, especially those unfamiliar with how governmental bodies operate. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office has made it a priority to educate the public on these deceptive practices.

These scams are not only financially damaging but can cause unnecessary stress among community members already dealing with a myriad of other local issues, from property tax rates to public safety.

Remember, governmental agencies will not request payment via cash apps or gift cards. Always verify before taking any action. Stay alert and help keep your community safe by sharing this information with family and friends.

In general, sheriff’s offices do not call you when they have business with you — they prefer to make a personal visit.
