Meet Georgia's police chief of the year for 2023

Billy Grogan, Police Chief for the Dunwoody Police Department, has been honored as this year’s Outstanding Chief of the Year by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

Grogan received the prestigious award at GACP’s summer training conference held in Savannah.

Having dedicated over 41 years to law enforcement, Chief Grogan started his career in 1981 with the Marietta Police Department and advanced to the position of Deputy Chief. He then took on the role of Chief of Police for the newly established City of Dunwoody in 2008.

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition, Grogan acknowledged the support of his colleagues in Marietta and Dunwoody, emphasizing that he wouldn’t have achieved this milestone without them. He also extended his thanks to his wife and family for their unwavering support throughout his career.

Chief Grogan’s remarkable accomplishments include holding a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Kennesaw State University. Additionally, he has completed prestigious programs such as the FBI National Academy, Georgia Law Enforcement Command College, the Georgia-International Law Enforcement Exchange and the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) at the Police Executive Research Forum.

Dunwoody City Manager Eric Linton spoke highly of Grogan, stating, “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor. Chief Grogan’s dedication has kept the Dunwoody Police Department at the forefront of law enforcement agencies in the state.”

Apart from his professional commitments, Grogan actively engages in community programs like Coffee with a Cop, Polar Plunge, National Night Out, and Read Across America. He also holds leadership positions in several non-profit organizations.
