Police shoot machete wielding Georgia man

The News: One man was shot and injured in a police shooting in Commerce in Jackson County.

The City of Commerce Police Department has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an independent investigation.

What Happened?: On Monday, July 10, officers responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic incident near the 5700 block of Mt. Olive Road in Commerce. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man wielding a machete-like weapon.

According to the GBI, despite verbal commands to put down the weapon, the man refused. Consequently, officers fired their weapons, hitting the man.

GBI officials say the officers promptly provided aid, and the injured man was subsequently transported to a Gainesville hospital. Details regarding the man’s current condition remain unknown.

No officers sustained any injuries during the incident.

What’s Next?: The GBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the shooting. Once complete, the case file will be handed over to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for review. This process aims to determine the legality of the officers’ actions and ensure accountability.
