Drivers relying on State Route 316 in Gwinnett County will need to head out a little early the next few days as a construction project will close lanes along the roadway and will put vehicle pacing measures in place.

The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation project to build the Harbins Road interchange at State Route 316 will take place over the next few days.

This is the second time traffic will be paced in order to prepare and place bridge beams on the new structure; this time the lane closures will impact westbound traffic on S.R. 316. The contractor will close the left lane of S.R. 316 westbound Friday, Feb. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting about 1/2 mile in advance of the Harbins Road intersection. This lane closure will allow the bridge beams to be brought on site and placed on the bridge’s new structure.

On the following Monday and Tuesday nights, Feb. 8 and 9, the contractor will close the left lane of S.R. 316 westbound from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. While this lane closure is in place, westbound S.R. 316 traffic approaching the project will be paced to allow workers to set the bridge beams over the road. The goal is to set five beams each night, so traffic is expected to be paced five times.

Pacing traffic means that law enforcement officers place their vehicles at the front of a lane of traffic and slow the traffic to provide a gap of time and space at the construction site without any motorists in the work zone. Message boards will be in place to make motorists aware of the pending work so they can take alternate routes as needed.
