Red flags to watch for: The sheriff’s office listed several warning signs, including contractors who claim to have leftover materials from another job, push for same-day payment, refuse to provide a written estimate or contract, demand full payment before starting work, or cannot provide local references or proof of a real business.
What the sheriff’s office says to do: Residents are advised to get multiple quotes before agreeing to any work, verify that a contractor holds a valid license and insurance, check reviews and local references, and never pay in full before the job is finished.
