Governor Brian Kemp has ordered flags across Georgia to be flown at half-staff in the wake of a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder. The order, issued on September 5, comes after a horrific act of violence on school grounds the previous day left four people dead—two teachers and two students—while several others were seriously injured.
The victims have been identified as Richard Aspinwall, 39, Christina Irimie, 53, and two students, Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, both 14 years old. The governor’s order reflects the grief felt across the state and acknowledges the families who lost loved ones in what he called a “senseless act of violence.”
“Georgia mourns alongside the families of the victims,” Kemp said, directing flags on all state buildings and grounds to be lowered as a mark of respect. The flags will remain at half-staff until the interment of the final victim.
This latest tragedy has shocked the Winder community and rekindled debates over school safety and gun violence. State and local officials are continuing their investigation into the shooting.
