New numbers released by the Georgia Department of Public Health show that the number of cases in Georgia continue to increase sharply, along with hospitalizations and deaths from the disease.

As of the health department’s 3 p.m. status update Thursday, the state had a total of 71,095 confirmed cases of COVID-19, adding 1,714 cases since yesterday. This rounds out the third consecutive day of new case counts above 1,700 and is the seventh day this month that the state has reported more than 1,000 new cases in a single day.

The state also saw a larger-than-usual number of deaths reported Thursday, with 47 deaths reported in a single day. According to the health department, 2,745 people have died from COVID-19 in Georgia.

Hospitalizations are also on the rise. For the last three days Georgia has reported more than 100 hospitalizations per day. On Thursday, the state added 144 new hospitalizations bringing the total to 10,457.

On Wednesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp posted a video stating that Georgia’s percentage of COVID-19 cases had gone from 13% to 8% of those tested. He also repeated his plea for Georgians to wear masks.

Cases continue to surge in Gwinnett County, which now has 7,223 confirmed cases, 167 deaths and 950 hospitalizations. Fulton County has 6,163 confirmed cases, 309 deaths and 1,027 hospitalizations.
