Lake Lanier Islands Resort is expanding its footprint with a new chapel and garden, a project rooted in family memory as much as hospitality.
The Williams Chapel, set to open September 21, honors Sara D. Williams, the late wife of resort owner Virgil R. Williams. The surrounding gardens are dedicated to their daughter, Mendy Williams Bowling, who died in 2021. Together, the spaces are designed to serve as a new centerpiece for weddings, vow renewals, and community gatherings at the resort.
A Family Story Turned Landmark
Perched on one of the highest points of the resort property, the chapel features arched windows, a covered porch, and room for about 150 guests. Outside, brick paths wind through a garden filled with roses and crape myrtles—flowers chosen specifically because they were favorites of the women it honors.
From Private Tribute to Public Space
While the chapel reflects personal history, it also expands the resort’s slate of wedding and event venues. Lanier Islands already hosts ceremonies on lakefront piers, at outdoor amphitheaters, and near waterfalls. The new space adds an indoor option with year-round appeal.
Resort officials say it can also accommodate non-wedding events such as christenings or celebrations of life.
Community Unveiling
The chapel will officially open during the resort’s Wedding Open House on Sunday, September 21, from noon to 3 p.m. The public is invited to tour the new facility, sample food and drinks, and hear live music while exploring other event sites around the resort.
