Valdosta High School’s leadership is changing hands. Dr. Alex Alvarez, currently the Director of K-12 Science, STEM, Gifted, and AVID at Valdosta City Schools, will serve as the interim principal of the high school. Alvarez, who boasts more than 17 years of service with the district and almost 22 years in the field of education, steps into the role with ample experience under his belt.
The shift in positions came about as Dr. Janice Richardson, the previous principal of Valdosta High, transitioned to a new role within the district.
Starting July 25, Richardson took the reins as the Director of Special Projects for Valdosta City Schools.
With Alvarez assuming interim duties, the district has started its search for a permanent principal for the school. The school board is seeking a leader who not only shares their core values but also has a clear vision for lifting the school to higher standards of excellence.

Superintendent Craig Lockhart shared his philosophy on the district’s educational approach: “We believe there are two types of people in education: teachers and those who support teachers.” He further added, “The chosen candidate must embrace this philosophy and possess the leadership qualities to drive Valdosta High School toward a future of unparalleled success.”
