In Toombs County, tensions were high earlier today after law enforcement responded swiftly to a potential threat involving two students.
A concerning social media post, which hinted at a “shooting,” prompted the Toombs County School System to alert both the Sheriff’s Office and the Lyons Police Department. Though the post did not mention any specific schools, the individuals behind the post were confirmed to be Toombs County students.
Authorities detained two persons of interest before school began and additional law enforcement was dispatched to all schools as a precaution. According to the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, no evidence suggests any immediate danger to students or staff, and the school day continued as planned.
This event comes on the heels of a tragic school shooting earlier in the week at Apalachee High School, where four lives were lost. The shooting, which occurred just days ago, involved a student who used a weapon provided by his father.
Threats of school violence and gun crimes tend to rise in the wake of school shootings and school systems throughout the nation are on high alert for the possibility of copycat crimes.
