A 54-year-old dump truck driver has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges after striking and killing a 20-year-old woman in a Brookhaven crosswalk, then leaving the scene for 20 minutes before returning.

Omar Ali of Mableton was arrested by Brookhaven Police following Tuesday’s fatal crash at Clairmont Road and Dresden Drive. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

What happened

Traffic cameras captured the collision around 12:06 p.m. on October 21st. Police say the footage shows the young woman lawfully entering the crosswalk when Ali’s dump truck struck her while making a right turn from Dresden Drive onto Clairmont Road.

After the impact, Ali drove away from the scene. He returned approximately 20 minutes later, according to investigators.

The Chamblee Police Department initially notified Brookhaven Police about the accident. When officers arrived, they found the victim had already died from her injuries.

The charges

Ali faces three charges:

  • Vehicular homicide
  • Felony hit and run
  • Failure to yield pedestrian right of way in crosswalks

Ali is being held at the DeKalb County jail.
