DORAVILLE — The GBI is investigating a police shooting that occurred Thursday morning after a traffic stop in Doraville. One man was shot and has sustained injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.
According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that at about 11:50 a.m., Doraville Police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a van on Chamblee Tucker Road in Doraville. The van was known to be driven by 41-year-old Walfre Bautista Miranda who had active felony warrants.
GBI officials say when officers attempted to stop the van, Miranda rammed into a patrol car by reversing into it, then pulled forward. Officers attempted to box Miranda in to prevent him from leaving.
According to police, Miranda then got out of the van with a machete in his hand and advanced towards an officer. He was able to get inside and take control of the patrol car with access to all weapons inside, including a rifle. At that time, officers shot Miranda and he was taken into custody.
