A welfare check at a Cherokee County home turned deadly Saturday night when deputies shot and killed a man and found his mother dead inside.

What’s Happening: Deputies went to a home on Whisperwood Trail for a welfare check Saturday evening. They found an armed 26-year-old man outside and shot him. One deputy was hurt and treated at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital before going home.

What’s Important: After the shooting, deputies smelled something coming from inside the house. They found a dead woman inside who was the mother of the man who was shot. Her body was badly decomposed, meaning she had been dead for a while.

Between the Lines: The sheriff’s office does not know how the mother died because of how long her body had been there. Her body went to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab to find out what happened to her.

What We Don’t Know: The sheriff’s office has not said what happened between the man and deputies before the shooting. They also have not released the names of anyone involved because family members have not been told yet.

What Happens Next: The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will look into the shooting by deputies. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the mother’s death.
