CALHOUN — An armed standoff at a home in Calhoun between a 64-year-old man and police ended peacefully after a crisis negotiator arrived at the scene Saturday afternoon.
Deputies were dispatched to the area of Craigtown Road and U.S. Highway 41 north of Calhoun in response to multiple reports of an intoxicated, threatening man armed with a gun.
Deputies arrived within minutes and encountered 64-year-old George Barry Goodwin, who retreated inside a utility shed behind his home.
“Goodwin, armed with a shotgun, kept the deputies at bay for some time until an experienced Sheriff’s Office crisis negotiator arrived on the scene,” said Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston.

Ralston said the negotiator convinced Goodwin to surrender himself. He was taken into custody without further incident. Goodwin was not injured during the incident and is lodged in the county jail.
According to Ralston, Goodwin will face firearms related charges, and detectives are investigating reports that he threatened bystanders as well.
