17-year-old boy shot and killed in the parking lot of Sugarloaf Mills

LAWRENCEVILLE — A teenage boy from Jefferson is dead after being shot in the parking lot at Sugarloaf Mills Wednesday night.

The Gwinnett Police Department is investigating a shooting that left 17-year-old Elijah Dewitt dead. 

Shortly after 8:15 p.m. officers responded to a “person shot call” at Sugarloaf Mills. Upon arrival, officers located Dewitt dead on the ground in the parking lot with gunshot wounds. 

This is an active investigation, and detectives are exploring all motives. 

Police currently have one suspect in custody out of state in connection with this case. The investigation is still ongoing, but detectives say they have reason to believe that this was not a random encounter and that some of the parties involved in the incident were known to each other.
