Middle Georgia Regional Airport is set to receive $4,012,500 in state grants for several key development projects aimed at expanding its aviation services and boosting economic growth in the region. The funding, allocated by the Georgia Department of Transportation, follows advocacy efforts by local authorities, including Macon-Bibb County and the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority.
The grants will be used for the construction of a new 10,000-square-foot box hangar, a row of T-hangars, and the extension of East Drive. The box hangar will accommodate multiple aircraft under one roof, while the T-hangars will be leased to individual aircraft owners, significantly expanding the airport’s general aviation services. The East Drive extension will provide access to a highly sought-after area of the airport, opening up new opportunities for private and industrial development.
“With these three projects, we’ll be able to expand services at the airport, all while directly addressing a national aircraft storage issue,” said Airport Director Doug Faour. “Once complete, new land will be available for potential private and industrial development, and we will have increased our aircraft storage capacity by 20 to 25%.”
This latest funding builds on previous state support, including grants allocated in 2023 for the runway extension at the airport, which is seen as a critical project for future growth. The new grants are part of a broader effort by the Georgia General Assembly and the Georgia Department of Transportation to enhance regional airports across the state.

“Our airports are really taking off in terms of major improvements and growth,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “It’s recognized around the state how important this airport is to the entire Middle Georgia region, and I want to thank all of the people, agencies, and state legislators and officials who worked together as a team to make these funds available.”
The airport has recently undergone several other significant upgrades, including the extension of the runway and the construction of a new Fixed Base Operator terminal. These developments are expected to attract larger planes, increase passenger traffic, and stimulate further economic development in the area.
