The Long County School System has announced that the start of the school year will be delayed due to severe flooding throughout the county. Students and staff will now begin school on Monday, August 12, instead of the originally scheduled date.
This decision comes in the wake of Tropical Storm Debby, which has brought significant rainfall and flooding to several parts of Georgia, including Long County.
The storm, which initially made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Florida, has moved through South Georgia, causing widespread disruption, including road closures and power outages. Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state of emergency, emphasizing the storm’s impact as primarily a “water event” with heavy rains expected to continue, leading to flooding in many areas .
In response to the storm, emergency management protocols have been activated across the state, with the Georgia National Guard on standby and various agencies coordinating to ensure public safety. The American Red Cross and other organizations have established shelters for those displaced by the storm.
