9 Firework Safety Tips You Need to Know Before July 4th

Start

With the Fourth of July just days away, Georgia residents are looking forward to vibrant firework displays. However, as revelers prepare for the festivities, firework safety must remain a top priority.

Alarming Statistics Reveal Firework Dangers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported a sobering set of statistics for 2023: eight people lost their lives and 9,700 were injured due to fireworks. These incidents often result from misuse, malfunctioning devices, and noncompliant products.

Particularly vulnerable to firework-related injuries are teens and children. Common injuries include burns and trauma to the hands, fingers, head, face, and ears. Given their inherent curiosity and potential lack of experience, kids and teens are at greater risk, making adult supervision and education crucial components of firework safety.

Firework Safety Tips for a Safe Celebration

To ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday, consider the following firework safety tips:

  1. Supervise All Firework Activities: Never allow young children to handle fireworks. Older children should use them only under close adult supervision.
  2. Use Legal Fireworks: Make sure to use fireworks that are legal in your area. Avoid purchasing fireworks from unlicensed vendors.
  3. Follow Instructions: Read and follow all instructions on the fireworks packaging.
  4. Wear Safety Gear: Use protective eyewear and gloves when handling fireworks.
  5. Maintain a Safe Distance: Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly. Ensure spectators are at a safe distance.
  6. Never Relight Duds: If a firework fails to ignite, do not try to relight it. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in water.
  7. Keep Water Handy: Have a bucket of water or a hose ready in case of fire or other mishaps.
  8. Light Fireworks on Flat Surfaces: Always set fireworks on a flat, stable surface away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable materials.
  9. Dispose of Fireworks Safely: Once finished, soak spent fireworks in water before disposing of them in a metal trash can.
