SAVANNAH — An Illinois man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after police say he was hit by a driver who was fleeing a previous hit-and-run incident Saturday afternoon.
According to the Savannah Police Department, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, 39-year-old Benjamin Mims was driving a Nissan Maxima and was in the process of fleeing from a previous hit and run incident when he began traveling west on Bryan Street. Police say When Mims attempted to make a turn on Lincoln Street, he entered the sidewalk and struck a pedestrian, later identified as 30-year-old Adrian Jones of Bellville, Illinois.
Jones was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Mims was apprehended and given charges from both incidents which include, failing to stop at a stop sign (two counts), improper left turn, reckless driving, driving under the influence (two counts), following too close, hit, and run, and serious injury by motor vehicle.
The Traffic Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate this crash.
