State authorities are investigating the hanging death of an inmate in Lumpkin County.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that at about 10:38 a.m. Thursday, Lumpkin County inmate Randall Thomas Hanley, of Dahlonega, was found hanging in his jail cell.

Lumpkin County officers performed lifesaving measures and EMS transported Hanley to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at about 7 p.m.

Hanley was in custody for several charges related to a domestic violence incident, GBI officials said. Hanley was denied bond on these charges on June 18 and his case was pending trial.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation that is currently ongoing. Preliminary investigation indicates that Hanley died from self-inflicted hanging. The autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the GBI Crime Lab.
