GBI: Georgia police officers shot a North Carolina man after he attacked them with a machete

ATHENS -- A North Carolina man is in serious condition following a confrontation with police involving a machete.

ATHENS — A North Carolina man is in serious condition following a confrontation with police involving a machete.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, preliminary information indicates that just before 5 p.m. Saturday, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a domestic incident at University Gardens Apartments located on Baxter Drive in Athens.

Officers say when they arrived, they were confronted by a man from North Carolina who was armed with a machete. Police say, the man ignored commands from the officer to drop the machete and attacked one of the officers. The officer fired at the man, striking him.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for review.
