Man killed after shootout with police in Augusta

AUGUSTA — A fatal officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of one man and the injury of a Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 8 near the intersection of 12th and Ellis Streets in Augusta.

Richmond County deputies were responding to reports of a man brandishing a firearm and threatening locals in the vicinity. The individual was located in an enclosed area of a business bordering Ellis Street, and deputies were able to confirm that he was armed. Despite attempts at negotiation, the situation escalated, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

The unidentified man was fatally wounded in the altercation and pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy will be carried out by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.

During the incident, a Richmond County deputy was also shot. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, the nature of his injuries currently undisclosed.

The GBI has been requested by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent investigation into the incident. Upon its completion, the case file will be submitted to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further review.

This case marks the 50th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year. As of now, no additional details regarding the shooting have been released.
