Monroe County is preparing for the potential impacts of Hurricane Helene, which has been classified as an unprecedented event by the National Weather Service due to increased rainfall projections. In response, the Monroe County Emergency Management Agency has activated three emergency shelters to assist residents, particularly those living near waterways who may be more vulnerable to flooding.

The three shelters will open starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday and will remain open until 5 p.m. the following day. These locations are:

  • High Falls Station 2, located at 42 Towaliga River Drive, Jackson, GA, which is the only shelter accommodating pets, provided they are crated.
  • Monroe County Recreation Department at 100 Dan Pitts Drive, Forsyth, GA.
  • New Providence Baptist Church at 260 Highway 41 S, Forsyth, GA.

Residents are encouraged to bring their own non-perishable food and snacks.

This proactive response by Monroe County follows warnings across Georgia as Hurricane Helene approaches, with local governments activating travel alerts and emergency plans across multiple counties. The state has also launched a travel alert webpage to help evacuees and travelers access important resources such as shelter and lodging availability.
