Glynn County Prepares for Hurricane Milton

As of Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service has issued multiple warnings for Glynn County as Hurricane Milton nears coastal Georgia, bringing the potential for heavy rains, high winds, and storm surge. The storm is expected to impact Glynn County on Thursday, with conditions worsening throughout the day.

Expected Local Impacts

Wind: Coastal areas of Glynn County are projected to experience hurricane-force gusts between 60-74 mph, with strong tropical storm-force winds of 39-57 mph expected across the entire county. Winds could arrive as early as 7 a.m. on Thursday, continuing into the early afternoon.

Rainfall & Flooding: Heavy rainfall is anticipated, which could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas. A Flood Watch is in effect for portions of coastal Georgia, including Glynn County.

Storm Surge: Residents in coastal zones should prepare for a storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground level. This is especially relevant in areas that saw flooding during past hurricanes such as Matthew, Irma, and Nicole.

Marine Conditions: Dangerous conditions will begin to affect coastal waters late Wednesday night, posing risks for boaters and anyone near the water.

State of Emergency

Both the City of Brunswick and Glynn County have extended their State of Emergency declarations. Brunswick’s will remain in place through October 16, while Glynn County’s aligns with the state’s recent extension.

Community and Business Closures

Government Offices: Glynn County and City of Brunswick offices, including courts, will be closed on Thursday.

Schools and Education: All Glynn County schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday, with teachers scheduled to return on Friday for a workday. The College of Coastal Georgia will shift to online-only classes on Thursday, with normal schedules resuming on Friday.

Recreation: The County’s Recreation & Parks activities are canceled for Thursday.

Health Services: The Glynn County Health Department’s clinic and environmental health services will be closed on Thursday, reopening on Friday with rescheduled appointments.

Water and Sewer: Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water Sewer Commission offices are closed Thursday.

Jekyll Island Authority Operations: Some Jekyll Island services will remain open under reduced hours:

• Guest Information Center, Mini Golf & Bike Rental, Mosaic Museum, and Georgia Sea Turtle Center open with limited hours.

• Jekyll Island Golf Club and Tennis Center will be closed.

• Jekyll Island Administrative Offices will be open with limited services.

Most operations are expected to resume normally by Friday, October 11.

Traffic and Utility Preparations

Evacuation Traffic: As residents and visitors evacuate, I-95 is seeing increased traffic, particularly near Exit 29, though traffic flow remains smooth. Gas stations are experiencing long lines as drivers prepare for potential fuel shortages.

Georgia Power: The utility has stated that repair crews are remaining in Georgia to address potential storm impacts rather than deploying to Florida.

Libraries and Public Services

Library Closures: Marshes of Glynn Libraries will close at 4 p.m. Wednesday, with all programming canceled until October 14, including events like story times, tai chi, and ESL classes.

Residents who observe storm-related damage are encouraged to contact Glynn County or City Public Works at 912-554-7111. The county also offers a “See Click Fix” app for reporting issues directly through the Glynn County website.
