Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has confirmed that 11 deaths occurred in the state due to Hurricane Helene. The storm, which impacted Georgia after making landfall in Florida, brought severe weather conditions, including heavy rains, strong winds, and flooding.

Kemp had declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm to enable the state to prepare for the hurricane’s impact. Although exact details about the locations and causes of these deaths have not been fully disclosed, the loss of life is a testimony to the the severity of the storm’s effect on Georgia residents.

According to Kemp, the deaths occurred along the storm’s path between Valdosta and Augusta and many of the lives lost were a result of fallen trees. The names of the deceased will not be released until their families have been notified.

One of those killed was a Southeast Georgia firefighter.

The hurricane also caused widespread power outages, leaving many Georgians without electricity. Rescue operations and recovery efforts are ongoing as the state responds to flooding and damage from downed trees and debris.
