SUWANEE — If you were stuck on I-85 Monday afternoon wondering what was causing the delay, it turns out it was a serious accident involving a police car and three other vehicles.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. a Gwinnett Police officer notified Gwinnett Communications that he had been involved in a collision on I-85 Northbound south of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

The officer was injured and, due to those injuries, was unable to assess the other parties involved.

Several other Gwinnett officers responded and discovered there were four vehicles involved in the collision. The officer was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

According to police, the driver in a second vehicle, a 33-year-old female, was also transported with serious injuries. The driver in a third vehicle, a 21 year old female, was checked for complaints of injuries on scene but was not transported. The driver of the final vehicle, a 31 year old male, did not complain of any injuries and he was eventually released and drove his vehicle from the scene.

The other three vehicles were taken to Police Headquarters for further analysis. Due to the severity of the collision the Accident Investigation Unit was called to the scene to investigate the collision.

Four lanes of I-85N were shut down for about 2 and a half hours. The cause of the collision is still being investigated.
