Join your local library from today– October 2 for the 2021 celebration of the right to read during Banned Books Week! Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books and brings together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas.

At a time when LGBTQIA+ books and books that focus on racism and racial justice are challenged for removal from the library bookshelves, this year’s Banned Books Week is a reminder of the unifying power of stories and the divisiveness of censorship. This year’s theme is “Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us.” and it underscores how books reach across boundaries and build connections between readers.

Books unite us. Middle Georgia Regional Libraries collections support sharing stories important to all patrons, which means sharing various materials. Books reach across boundaries and build connections between readers. Censorship, on the other hand, divides us and creates barriers.

If you’re looking for a way to discover new books, genres, or authors, join a book club! Book clubs are a great way to establish a sense of community with other readers, discuss broader themes and characters that can give you a new perspective on reading. Learn more about MGRL book clubs below and contact your local library for more information.
