State and local leaders are expressing grief and outrage after a shooting near Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention left a DeKalb County police officer dead.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp

“Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians. Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are. Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians. We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center.”

Congressman Hank Johnson

It’s always deeply disturbing to hear of a police officer dying in the line of duty. But the pain is magnified beyond measure when it happens right here at home to one of DeKalb County’s finest. I’ve had the privilege of being around these heroic first responders my entire career. The sacrifice and dedication they provide to keep us safe can never fully be repaid. Mereda and I express our deepest sympathies to the family of the fallen officer, his colleagues, and the entire Emory and CDC communities.”

DeKalb Commissioner Ted Terry

“It has been released that the officer who was ambushed and shot during the active shooting incident that horrified our community today, has passed away. It is a devastating and dark night knowing that this hero gave his life to protect and serve.

“We, as a community are heartbroken and I share my deepest condolences to the family, the DeKalb County Police Department, fellow first responders, and the citizens of DeKalb County. Today this hit home for many. We hear tragic stories every day and we always try to process why.

“There are similar factors that share a common excuse or reason, and this ignites and renews my commitment to continue to fight for legislation that mandates gun safety controls and extensive criminal background checks, and comprehensive, affordable, and accessible mental health assistance and resources.

“Every senseless death is a tragedy and shatters not only the circle of loved ones, but sense of security, faith in the world around us, and impacts how we view others. Elected officials, stakeholders, faith based leaders, and members of the community must join together as one voice and one effort to advocate for change, no matter the party or position on constitutional rights you have, but to prioritize the safety and the holistic care of people.

DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston

“My team and I have been in close contact with our law enforcement partners throughout today’s events near the Centers for Disease Control and Emory University.  We were devastated to learn about the tragic passing of an officer with the DeKalb County Police Department who bravely answered the call when our community needed him most.  Earlier this evening, I called Interim Chief Padrick to offer my and my office’s deepest condolences.  My heart goes out to the officer’s family, friends, and the DeKalb County community as we all mourn this tremendous loss.”

Former DeKalb CEO, Superintendent, and Current Candidate for Governor Mike Thurmond

“I am devastated to learn of today’s shooting on the Emory University campus, another horrific instance of senseless gun violence that must not be tolerated in the state of Georgia. I am heartbroken to learn that a courageous DeKalb County Police Officer was killed in the line of duty.

“This is another tragic reminder that our men and women in law enforcement bravely put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities. We are praying for the officer’s family, and for all our brave first responders who continue to protect and serve in the face of this horrible tragedy.”
