Sharks don’t typically make it to the headlines, but when they do, it’s because something is off. A shark, estimated to be over 10 feet long, was spotted just 100 yards offshore between 17th and 18th Street, sending lifeguards into action.
The sighting wasn’t your average shark swim-by; this one was feeding, and that raised the alarm.
Lifeguards quickly cleared the water from 15th to 18th Street as a precaution. Moments after the initial sighting, smaller sharks were also seen moving closer to the shore.
Tybee Island Ocean Rescue says there’s no need to panic. Sharks belong in the ocean—it’s their home. But given the circumstances, it’s clear that lifeguards are taking this situation seriously and prioritizing beachgoers’ safety.
Officials remind beach goers that the water wasn’t cleared just because a shark showed up. It was cleared because of how it was feeding. Stay safe and listen to the lifeguards.
