WASHINGTON — A homeowner in Wilkes County’s home was saved from massive flooding thanks to quick work by county and Georgia Department of Transportation officials.
Last Thursday, Wilkes County foreman Wade Mayo received a flood alert call from a frantic resident who lives off US 378/Lincolnton Road in Washington.
Mayo found a stopped up pipe off state right of way.
“Through courthouse records, we eventually confirmed this pipe resting on private property, but on Feb. 6 we wanted to help as much as possible,” GDOT said in a post on its Facebook page.
The Washington property began to flood heavily, and the local crew flew to action. GDOT staff made a call to the City of Washington personnel to get a sewer cleaner to help clean the pipe.
Crews stayed in the wind and rain from 3:30 to 11 p.m. to ensure clearance of obstructions and the water recession. The property owner was grateful for the extra work put in to help save his home from flood damage.
