An intersection in downtown Athens will soon bear the name of the late University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley.
A ceremony to unveil the Vince Dooley Memorial Intersection is scheduled for Monday, August 28, at 9:30 a.m., marking a tribute to a coach who has left an indelible mark on Georgia’s sports history.
The dedication, to be held at the intersection of U.S. Route 78, also known as Broad St., and Lumpkin St., is the result of House Resolution 522, introduced by State Representative Houston Gaines, a Republican from Athens, during the 2023 legislative session. The resolution was later incorporated into the Georgia General Assembly’s annual road and bridge dedication legislation, House Resolution 256.
Members of the Athens-Clarke County Legislative Delegation, Governor Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp, local elected officials, and the Dooley Family will be present at the event.
