Some National Park Services sites in Georgia, like Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, will remain open as the federal government shutdown continues.
Visitors to the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area may notice reduced trash collection, restrooms cleaned less frequently, and phones not being answered during the shutdown.
Brittany Jones, the executive director of the Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy, the official friend’s group of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, said the organization is encouraging visitors to be safe and carry out any trash they bring in.
“I think it’s a good opportunity to step up and be a steward and feel a sense of responsibility to help protect and maintain these on behalf of our partners out there who just can’t right now,” she said.
The Chattahoochee National Recreation Area spans 7,000 acres. For now, five employees will continue to work without pay during the shutdown.
